a nourishing phone call

Riiich phoned me.

Our conversation roamed freely around films: Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The King’s Speech, Baz Luhrman’s Romeo and Juliet; books: Dracula, Frankenstein, The Chosen One, Tess of the D’Urbervilles; the dreadful plots and acting in porn films; Amon Wilds and his Victorian values that still are present in modern day living (he built many beautiful buildings in Brighton); how wonderful it is to read beautiful, gripping prose; and last, but most definitely not least, a shared love of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which we hope to experience together in concert.

I learnt about his love of singing (including the Ninth which he sang in concert!) and of Kate Bush’s last album, Aerial, which contains a CD dedicated to musically describing the transition of a day. I think that relates to the Ninth and I’m inspired to listen to it – a future artist’s date.

What strikes me about this conversation is the thread of loving a good story told well, whatever its media; it’s not enough that the plot is good; for maximum enjoyment it needs to be well written or well acted or well played – crafted with love and care by all involved in the project.

My inner artist felt so well nourished during and after this conversation.
